A First Swim

The water is deep.

I know, he knows.

Adventure knows it too.

Playfully splashes and beckons us forward.

Come. Join me.

He learned how to swim.

Ingrained in his brain

Since before his birth.

So natural and tempting

To take a breath and dive right in.

Instead he looks at me,

Waiting for a go ahead

Before dipping a toe

And piercing that blue veil.

Birds fight for a seat

To caw and cackle

And watch that first, teasing stroke.

As water parts to make way.

The sky’s reflection hiding those

Muddied depths.

A thousand mouths ready to taste the newcomer.

I nod.
