  1. There’s a dearth of good (modern) Chinese-inspired fantasy. I really enjoyed Guy Gavriel Kay’s Under Heaven, but felt it teased the paranormal stuff and could’ve hit that angle a lot harder. Bridge of Birds was hilarious and poignant but the number of strong female characters can be counted on one hand- and one’s a ghost!

    • I suppose I should clarify- by ‘modern’, I meant ‘written within the last century’, not ‘set within the last century’.
